MATHEMATICS AND MATHEMATICAL LITERACY TEAM OF SASTRI   COLLEGE
Mathematics provides us with skills and develops in us the ability to interpret and analyse information.  The ability to solve problems with ease and make knowledgeable decisions comes with the territory. The building of mathematical skills can be likened to that of building a house. If a firm, solid foundation is laid, then that house will stand firm. In the same light if we equip our children with necessary mathematical skills in the grade 8 and 9, the foundational years of high school, then we will set the scene for our children to excel in the years to come. Our aim is for Sastri College learners to outshine the rest, come their matriculation year. True education releases capacities, develops analytical abilities, confidence in oneself, will power and goal-setting competencies; and instils the vision that will enable a child to become a self-motivated agent of social transformation.

SASTRI COLLEGE’S MATHS

WIZ DOES US PROUD

We are indeed living in complex times.   Children need guidance and love more than ever before. Homes, schools,   educators and parents need to work together to counter the impact of the more   frequent negative forces that are increasingly influencing young minds.

At City Montessori School (CMS) in   Lucknow, India, it is believed that a school should be a lighthouse to   society. It uses Mathematics as a platform for learners to counter the harsh   realities of the world. CMS is founded by Dr Jagdish Gandhi and boasts a   student capacity of 58000 learners, which secured its place in the Guinness   Book of World records, based on learner population.

On 26th November, CMS   played host to an international mathematics competition. Sastri College’s Uzair Haffejee, grade 8, flared   against competitors from Thailand, Indonesia, Nigeria, Philippines, India and   Nepal. There were two legs of the tournament: an individual category as well   as a group heat. Uzair distinguished himself in both. He received two bronze   medals as well as a trophy for his efforts. Uzair, at the tender age of   thirteen, received a hero’s welcome by his proud family and friends. Sastri   College is exceptionally proud of this debut achievement, and anticipates   Uzair’s continued success in the future.

We are at a place in time that obliges   us to be proactive agents of social transformation and education must be   recognised as a powerful instrument of this transformation.

“True education releases capacities,   develops analytical abilities, confidence in oneself, will power and   goal-setting competencies; and instils the vision that will enable a child to   become a self-motivated agent of social transformation,” Dr J Gandhi.

Uzair Haffejee was accompanied on the trip to India Lucknow by Mrs M. Ramsaran, who was his   motivator, tutor  mentor and caretaker.

In November/December Miss S. Harrilall accompanied 32 learners to   Lucknow India as an ajudicator for the mathematics olmypiad.   The team was awarded 1 silver and 14   bronze medals.
